The Marine Park of Tavolara - Punta Coda Cavallo was initiated in 2001 to extend the protection of its northern brother Maddalena situated on the north-eastern sea of Sardinia. It extends roughly from Capo Ceraso towards Capo Coda Cavallo including Tavolara, Molara and Molarotto. Tavolara is a beautiful limestone island, edged with steep cliffs and plenty of eagle and hawk bird sanctuaries. There is a small urban area and two restaurants, but most development is found on the main land in the small towns of Olbia, San Teodoro, Taverna and Porto San Paolo. The small island of Tavolara has even been the smallest kingdom in the world when Charles Albert the King of Sardinia appointed Paolo Bertoleoni as the king of Tavolara in 1836. You can still find some descendants of Bertoleoni, several remains of tombs and even today a lot of Tavolara is restricted area because of a military base.

You can find Lagunas of pink flamingos, secluded islets like Isola Rossa and Isola Piana, but also the bustling town of Olbia. Since the foundation of the Marine Park, aquatic species are showing themselves, they even seem curious about us. Scuba diving is popular inside the Marine Park, especially near the steep pinnacles of La Secca del Papa. Tavolara is one of the most popular spots for scuba divers in Sardinia, probably in all of Italy.
