Elba, the gem of the Tuscan Archipelago, is the third largest island in Italy. Besides historic sights, you will be amazed by Elba's variety and stunning landscapes, its green countryside and steep cliffs, its many enchanting bays and beaches and the many picturesque but narrow old fishing villages. Most of Elba is part of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park area that also includes other small islands in the region such as Capraia, Giannutri, Montecristo, Giglio, Gorgona and Pianosa. It protects and conserves Elba's rich natural heritage, biodiversity and underwater marine world. Elba is easily reached by traditional ferry or hydrofoil from Piombino Marittima arriving in Portoferraio, often via Cavo; or you can fly into Pila airport at Marina di Campo. It is located in between mainland Italy and Corsica, in between the Tyrrhenian Sea and Ligurian Sea.

Highlights inside the capital Portoferraio are the forts Forte Falcone and the Forte Stella. Another popular town is Campo nell'Elba also located in the narrow central part of Elba and Marciana, the island's oldest settlement. Historici will know Elba as the place where Napoleon Bonaparte was deported; the Palazzina dei Mulini and other residences can still be visited on tours. One of the main activities on Elba is a climb up to the 1019m high granite mountain Monte Capanne, providing panoramic views of Italy's mainland, Corsica and several of the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago National Park. Other hikes throughout the island will bring you through woods, coastal scenery and lush Mediterranean vegetation.

Many of the numerous beaches on the Isle of Elba start shallow and drop off quite quickly, some are basic while others offer all including lockers, bars, water sports and umbrella rental. Some beaches are made out of black sand; some are rocky, pebble stoned or sandy. Pomonte Beach, Margidore Beach, La Biodola, Acquarilli Beach, Marina di Campo and Laconella Beach are several of the popular bathing places. Scuba diving is popular near most well-established beaches with pristine reefs, some wrecks and stunning geological points.
