The 110 meter long HMS Quail is one of the best known wreck dives in Italy. She was a British Royal Navy G45 Q class Destroyer, used in WWII patrolling the Adriatic shores. On the 15th of November 1943 she struck a mine coming from the German U-453. She drifted to the shores just south of Bari and waited for her salvage until December that year. After minor repairs she was first towed to Taranto in April 1944 to continue to Malta on the 18th of June 1944. She then capsized and landed in waters of 80 to 120 meter deep to be lost forever they thought. But then found again in 2002 by an Italian dive team under the supervision of Claudia Serpieri. Nowadays, she lies on a sandy seabed, amazingly intact, a short boat ride from Gallipoli, Pugglia. Only dive-able by advanced nitrox divers and divers are advised to dive here in the warmer summer months with higher visibilities.
