Sicily, Sardinia and the islands in the Mediterranean Sea are Italy's prime scuba dive destinations. Wrecks, dating back to the early Greek and Roman, litter the ocean floor; rocky reefs with some soft and hard coral formations and plenty of caves and caverns will make it a great place for scuba diving. The volcanic Aolian Islands and Ustica, the scenic Egadi Islands and the islands far into the Mediterranean Sea such as Pantellaria and Lampedusa add up to the already diverse underwater landscapes. The Marine Park of Tavolara up to Punta Coda Cavallo and the Maddalena Archipelago on the border with Corsica, France is a long protected park and therefore popular for its numerous fish and excellent coral formations. Also on the main land near Elba are excellent dive sites to be found as are around the Tremiti Islands inside the Adriatic Sea.
Pelagic species such as tuna, bream and barracuda's are common on deeper dives and in stronger currents. Groupers, moray eels, goat fish, nudi branches and sepias are more often found hiding between rocks which are overgrown in corals. Sea fans, sea whips, polyps in all sizes and colors create an astonishing place.
Italy is one of Europe's most popular holiday destinations. Not only for its mild climate and sunny days, but also for its excellent food, its thousands of miles of shoreline (Adriatic Sea and Mediterranean Sea) and its adaptation to Western needs. There are resorts and holiday villas in Italy of all types and in all price classes. Some of the main cultural sites in Italy are Rome with its rich history, but also towns as Napoli, Milan, Pisa, Venice, Verona, Naples, Bari and Vatican City will amaze you. Natural sights such as volcanic eruptions of Etna, its fantastic beaches and abundance of picturesque islands make Italy one of your best vacations.
