Trapani is one of the biggest cities along the north western coast of Sicily. It once was a major trade route between Africa and Europe resulting in a picturesque fishing town with fine seafood and excellent Sicilian cuisine. Trapani is used as a stopover base to explore the northwest of Sicily with ferries to the Egadi Islands, Pantellaria and even Tunis.

Highlights in and around Trapani include visits to beautiful churches, scenic cable car rides and pristine beaches. The Church of Santa Maria di Gesu, Cattedrale di San Lorenzo and Sant'Agostino with its lovely pink windows dating from late Medieval times and are excellent examples of Medieval architecture mixed with later Baroque style. Other sights worth exploring are the Basilica-Sanctuary of Maria Santissima Annunziata, the Museo Regionale Pepoli or the Madonna di Trapani, a very popular 14th century statue. There used to be many historic gems but during the Allied invasion in WWII, especially the district of San Pietro, many were destroyed. Via Garibaldi or Rue Nova, Piazza Vittorio Emanuele and Via Torrearsa are some of the spots in Trapani most visitors will remember. Attractions nearby are the historic hill town Erice, touristic San Vito lo Capo, Marsala known for its wine and the ancient Greek excavation site of Selinunte. Some of the best beaches are found near Marausa, a nice place just south of Trapani with elegant dining, plenty of water activities and a magnificent seafront marina for hiring boats. The Torre del Ligny used to be a Spanish defence tower in the 17th century but nowadays transformed in a museum. Villa Margherita is a nice public park to get away from the crowds with fountains, palm trees and banyan trees.

One of the best attractions for scuba divers and nature enthusiasts are the Egadi Islands, lying just offshore Trapani. Consisting out of Favignana (La Farfalla), Levanzo and Marettimo, with less than 5000 inhabitants, it is a remote place with a crystal clear blue sea and jagged shoreline intermixed with sandy beaches. You can find shipwrecks, deep caves, interesting walls and a wide diversity of marine life.
