Taormina is a lovely village situated on the east coast of the Province of Messina, built on top of the cliff Monte Tauro. It used to be an ancient Greek settlement of which many walls, fortresses, water reservoirs and even parts of a castle remain. However, the most important attraction is without doubt the famous Teatro Greco (Greek Theatre) from the third century BC where spectacles, concerts and festivals are being held. Taormina is a picturesque village with a superb backdrop at the highest volcano in Europe; Mount Etna, but also views at Cape Pelorus, the Bay of Naxos, the clear Ionian Sea and the village Castelmola higher up are beautiful.
There is a fantastic aerial tramway that connects this pretty town with the pretty beaches below. The small island Isola Bella is a nature reserve known for its seabirds and stunning underwater sea beds. You can dive and snorkel and see many colored fish, organisms, caves, grottos and even the leftovers of an historic wreck. The slightly more remote beaches of Spisone and Letojanni are found to the north of Mazzarò. Besides scuba diving, beaching and all sorts of water activities you can hike up towards Mount Etna, visit the Sanctuary of the Madonna or relax in the tropical park of Villa Comunale or Parco Duca di Cesarò. There are great waterfalls and minor rapids inside the Alcantara River Park near the Alcantara Gorges and the Gole dell'Alcantara.
Taormina is a village of tiny passages, winding medieval streets, churches, cathedrals and amazing panorama. Its clear blue sea, warm waters, brilliant coastline and tourist developments make it one of the best resort holidays in Sicily.
